Google’s Pixel 10 series, unveiled at the Made by Google event on August 20, 2025, is making waves with its ambitious upgrades, positioning it as a serious contender against Apple’s upcoming iPhone 17 Pro Max, expected to launch in early September. While the iPhone has long been the gold standard for premium smartphones, early reports suggest the Pixel 10 series comprising the Pixel 10, Pixel 10 Pro, Pixel 10 Pro XL, and Pixel 10 Pro Fold may edge out Apple’s flagship in several critical areas.
The Pixel 10 series introduces Google’s first fully custom Tensor G5 chip, built on a 3nm process by TSMC, boasting a 34% faster CPU and enhanced AI capabilities. Google claims the chip powers Gemini Nano 2.6x faster than its predecessor, enabling features like Magic Cue, a proactive AI suggestion engine, and Camera Coach for guided photography. In contrast, the iPhone 17 Pro Max is expected to feature Apple’s A19 Pro chip, also on a 3nm node, promising top-tier performance but potentially less focus on on-device AI compared to Google’s offerings.
Camera advancements further tilt the scales. The Pixel 10 Pro XL sports a triple-camera system with a 50MP main, 48MP ultrawide, and 48MP telephoto, supporting up to 10x optical zoom and AI-enhanced Pro Res Zoom. Apple’s iPhone 17 Pro Max is rumored to upgrade to a triple 48MP setup, including a 5x telephoto lens, but leaks suggest it may lack the Pixel’s AI-driven photography tools. Additionally, the Pixel’s 48MP front camera could outshine Apple’s speculated 24MP selfie shooter for sharper video calls.
Battery and charging also favor Google. The Pixel 10 Pro XL packs a 5,200mAh battery with 60W wired and 15W Qi2 wireless charging, alongside the new Pixelsnap magnetic accessory system. The iPhone 17 Pro Max may hit 5,000mAh with 35W wired charging, but Apple’s tighter ecosystem integration could still appeal to iOS loyalists.
Pricing remains competitive, with the Pixel 10 Pro XL starting at $1,200 and the iPhone 17 Pro Max potentially reaching $1,299. For those prioritizing AI innovation and camera versatility, Google’s Pixel 10 series might just steal the spotlight this fall.
