Germany Warns China’s ‘Crucial’ Support Is Enabling Putin’s War

TOKYO — German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul sharply criticized China on Monday, August 18, 2025, for providing “crucial” support that sustains Russia’s war against Ukraine. Speaking at the Sasakawa Peace Foundation in Tokyo, Wadephul highlighted Beijing’s role as Russia’s largest supplier of dual-use goods and its top buyer of oil and gas, according to Politico. His remarks come as U.S. President Donald Trump prepares to host Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and European leaders in Washington to discuss the ongoing conflict.

“Russia’s war is made possible by crucial Chinese support,” Wadephul declared, noting that 80% of the dual-use goods Russia relies on originate from China. He accused Beijing of undermining its own principles of non-interference and territorial integrity, stating, “China preaches the principles of non-interference and territorial integrity, but in reality undermines them.” The minister also pointed to North Korea’s supply of ammunition to Russia, which he said would not occur without China’s approval, further complicating global security dynamics.

Wadephul’s comments reflect Germany’s tougher stance on China, aligning with the EU’s growing frustration over Beijing’s refusal to condemn Russia’s actions. He warned that China’s behavior in the Taiwan Strait and South China Sea threatens global trade, adding, “Any escalation in this sensitive hub of international trade would have serious consequences for global security and the world economy.” Posts on X echoed his concerns, with @POLITICOEurope amplifying the warning about China’s role in enabling Putin’s aggression.

As Trump’s recent Alaska summit with Putin failed to secure a ceasefire, Wadephul urged increased pressure on Russia, including more aid for Ukraine. With European leaders like German Chancellor Friedrich Merz joining today’s talks, the focus remains on forging a “just and lasting peace” while addressing China’s destabilizing influence.
